What Is Cognitive Shuffling? The Technique That Works Where Counting Sheep Fails

Cognitive shuffling is the deliberate practice of picturing a series of unrelated, ordinary objects while you are trying to fall asleep. A kite. A spoon. A pine cone. A bucket of water. Each one for a few seconds, then gone, with no connection to the next.

It was developed by Luc Beaudoin, a cognitive scientist at Simon Fraser University, who named it serial diverse imagining. The everyday name it travels under is the cognitive shuffle.

The idea in one sentence

A random sequence is too incoherent for your brain to build a worry out of.

That is the whole thing, and it is why it is aimed at a different problem from relaxation techniques. If you are lying there physically tense, the military method or a breathing pattern is the right tool. If you are lying there perfectly relaxed while your mind runs a review of a conversation from four years ago, releasing your shoulders will not help. Cognitive shuffling is for the second case.

Why counting sheep does not work

Counting sheep is the famous one and it is famously useless — an Oxford study in 2002 found people who counted sheep took longer to fall asleep than people given no instruction at all. The group told to imagine a relaxing scene fell asleep about twenty minutes faster than either.

The likely reason is that counting sheep is a pattern. Sheep, sheep, sheep, next sheep. A pattern is boring but it is also predictable, which means it takes almost no attention — and whatever attention it does not take remains free for your actual thoughts. You end up counting sheep and worrying, at the same time.

Cognitive shuffling is designed to fail that test on purpose. The sequence is unpredictable, so it takes a little effort to produce the next image, and that small effort is exactly the capacity your rumination was using.

What the research actually says

Here is where an honest account differs from an enthusiastic one.

The general mechanism is reasonably supported. Imagery distraction — occupying the mind with neutral visual content — has outperformed no instruction and general distraction for sleep onset in controlled work, including Harvey and Payne’s study in Behaviour Research and Therapy in 2002. That is the family this technique belongs to.

The specific technique is not. Cognitive shuffling itself rests on pilot work and conference reports from Beaudoin’s group, not a body of large randomised trials. There is a plausible mechanism, some promising early data, and a technique that many people find works. There is not a literature you could call settled.

Anybody telling you cognitive shuffling is clinically proven is overstating it. Anybody telling you it is nonsense is ignoring the imagery-distraction evidence it sits on. It is somewhere in between, which is an unsatisfying place for a headline and an accurate one for a technique.

How to actually do it

The classic version uses a seed word. Pick something ordinary and emotionally neutral — bucket — and take the letters one at a time.

  • B: bicycle. Picture a bicycle for a few seconds. Then bakery. Then blanket. Then birch.
  • U: umbrella. Ukulele.
  • C: candle. Carpet. Cobweb.

And so on. The rules that matter:

Picture the object, do not say the word. The visual step is the technique. A list of words recited silently is much closer to counting sheep.

Keep them unrelated. If bicycle leads to your commute, you have started a story, and a story is exactly what you were trying not to build. Drop it and move on.

Neutral objects only. No people you know, nothing to do with tomorrow, nothing emotionally loaded.

Do not try to finish. There is no end state. The point is to be doing something mildly occupying at the moment you drift off.

Where doing it yourself falls apart

Two things go wrong, and they are the reason most people try this once and give up.

You run out of words. Generating random objects is a small creative task, and a tired brain is bad at it. After a couple of minutes you are either stuck on the same letter or you have stopped and started thinking about work again — which is the failure mode you began with.

The list repeats. If you use an app to do the generating and the app has a small word pool, you start seeing the same objects come round again, and a repeating list is a pattern. Once your brain notices the pattern, the technique has quietly turned back into counting sheep. This is the single most common complaint about the one other dedicated cognitive-shuffle app: it starts repeating after roughly ten prompts.

Running it without those problems

Cognitive shuffling is a technique for an ordinary bad night. If most nights are bad, and have been for a month, the thing that actually works is CBT-I, and a doctor can get you to it. And if you have been lying awake for a long stretch tonight specifically, the right move is not another technique — it is getting out of bed.
